Drone Inspection Safety Checklist

Structured safety steps for drone inspection operations across roofs, towers, industrial facilities, and infrastructure — before, during, and after the flight.
Inspection work is one of the most valuable applications of commercial drones and one of the least forgiving when something goes wrong. Close proximity to structures, complex electromagnetic environments, and crews already on site raise the stakes. A repeatable safety checklist is the difference between a smooth day of flying and an incident report.
Pre-mission planning
Every inspection job starts before the drone leaves the case. Review the site — building height, roof pitch, tower guy wires, transmission lines, and any known obstacles. Pull the sectional and check for controlled airspace, temporary flight restrictions, and notices to air missions. If a LAANC authorization is needed, request it at the highest altitude you might realistically need.
Coordinate with the site contact before you arrive. Confirm site access, on-site parking, who the safety officer is, and whether other work is happening in the area. A ten-minute call the day before saves an hour of confusion on site.
On-site setup
Site assessment
Walk the takeoff and landing area before unpacking. Identify a primary and alternate takeoff and landing zone, note any people in the vicinity, and confirm you have line of sight to the inspection area. For towers and tall structures, plan the ascent path so a lost-link event returns the aircraft to a safe altitude clear of the structure.
Aircraft and payload check
Run the manufacturer's pre-flight sequence: firmware current, batteries charged and matched, gimbal calibrated, storage cleared, sensors clean. For inspection, add payload-specific steps — thermal camera warmed up, focus verified on a reference target, radiometric data enabled if your deliverable requires temperature values.
During the flight
Maintain visual line of sight from the remote pilot in command. Use a visual observer for tower work and any operation that puts a structure between you and the aircraft. Fly a repeatable pattern with predetermined altitudes and orbit radii; consistency in the flight plan produces consistency in the imagery your client actually pays for.
Monitor battery, signal strength, and wind. Inspection missions tend to run long because operators want just one more pass. Set a return-to-home battery threshold that includes a healthy reserve for wind and terrain, and honor it.
Post-flight and reporting
After landing, do not skip the post-flight walk-around. Inspect propellers, motors, and airframe for damage. Log battery cycles. Move imagery from the drone to your project drive before leaving the site — an SD card left in a returned rental drone is a recoverable mistake but not a fun one.
Finish with a short mission summary: what was flown, who flew it, what conditions were like, and any anomalies. That summary becomes evidence of a well-run operation if a client, insurer, or regulator ever asks.
